Trade-In vs Private Sale
A private sale fetches more. A trade-in usually saves you sales tax on the new car. Comparing the two headline numbers is not a fair fight - this counts the tax saving so you can see the real gap.

The trade-in is worth its offer plus the sales tax it saves on the new car, which in most states is the trade-in value times your tax rate. A private sale is worth the price you get, with no tax saving at all.

$12,000 trade-in, $14,000 private

Only $500 more privately.
The tax saving is larger than the premium. Trading in leaves you better off and saves weeks of effort.

A state that taxes the full price
The same offers, no tax saving.
Without the credit the private sale is fully $2,000 better. Worth knowing which kind of state you are in.

Common questions about trading in vs selling privately
Should I trade in or sell privately?
A private sale almost always fetches more, but a trade-in is easier and in most states saves you sales tax on the new car. This works out what the trade-in is really worth once that tax saving is counted, so you compare like with like.
How does a trade-in save me tax?
In most states the sales tax on your new car is worked out after the trade-in is taken off the price. Trade in a $10,000 car in a 6% state and you save $600 in tax on top of the $10,000. That is real money and it narrows the gap considerably.
How much more does a private sale fetch?
Enough to matter, but it varies by car and market. Get a written trade-in offer and check what the same car is actually selling for privately near you. Those two real numbers beat any estimate.
What is a private sale actually worth in effort?
Listing, photographs, messages, strangers at your door, test drives, and handling payment safely. It can take weeks. If the gap is small once tax is counted, many people reasonably decide it is not worth it.
Should I mention the trade-in early?
Negotiate the new car price first and settle it, then raise the trade-in. Combining the two lets a dealer give you a good number on one and take it back on the other, and it is very hard to see which is happening.
What if I still owe money on it?
The loan has to be cleared either way. If you owe more than the car is worth, the difference does not vanish - a dealer will usually roll it into your new loan, which is how car debt becomes permanent.
