Where the money goes
Biggest first. For most local moves the deposit and rent up front beat the movers comfortably.

Cash needed is everything that leaves your account around the move. The old deposit is shown separately rather than subtracted, because it arrives weeks later and you cannot spend money you have not received yet.

Common questions about moving costs
What catches people out when moving?
The cash squeeze, not the total. You usually pay a new deposit and first month before your old deposit comes back, and you may pay for two places at once. The total might be manageable while the timing is not, and that is what causes trouble.
Will I get my old deposit back?
Usually most of it, but weeks later and often less than you expect. Photograph everything when you leave and get the condition agreed in writing. This tool shows it separately for exactly that reason - you cannot spend money you have not received.
Are movers worth it?
It depends on what your time and back are worth. A truck plus friends is cheaper in cash and dearer in everything else. Get two or three real quotes before deciding, because the range between them is often wide.
What do people forget entirely?
Connection fees for utilities and internet, the cost of eating out while the kitchen is packed, cleaning to get the deposit back, and time off work to be there for the move. Small individually, meaningful together.
How do I keep the cost down?
Move less stuff. Every extra box costs money to shift and sometimes to store. Selling or giving away what you will not miss is the only lever that reduces several costs at once.
What about the overlap?
Paying rent on two places at once is pure waste, but it buys a calmer move. A week of overlap is often worth it. A month usually is not, unless you are renovating.
